Padre Reverend Canon Wi Te Tau Huata C.B.E, Q.S.O, M.C. 2025, oil on canvas, 60 x 80 cm

Rev Huata was the padre of the mighty 28th Maori Battalion during WW2. He is depicted with the beloved 'Te Rau Aroha' canteen truck that accompanied the battalion throughout the war. The truck was donated by the children of the 'native' schools of NZ to the soldiers of the 28th MB. The truck provided cultural, spiritual and physical nourishment to the men as they endured the horrors of war. The Te Rau Aroha truck and Rev Huata mirror each other as a sanctuary for the soldiers and providers of 'Love in Action'. (presented to the Huata whanau at Waipatu marae, 21 March 2025)

This portrait depicts Sir Bom Gillies, The last surviving member of the mighty 28th Maori Battalion of WW2. I was fortunate enough to meet Sir Bom in his final months.

Sgt. Bert Wipiti was a fighter pilot during WW2. He became an 'Ace' during many victorious battles in the pacific. Sadly, he was killed over France later in the war. This painting hangs at Bert's old school, New Plymouth Boys High.
